Blood tests made available after body piercing investigation

Posted in Piercing News at 9:45 am by admin

The Queensland Government is offering free blood tests to anyone who has had body piercing at a Wide Bay salon after investigations have found up to 100 people could have been exposed to blood borne viruses.

Hervey Bay’s ‘Top to Toe’ and ‘The Skin Care Specialists’ licence to conduct body piercing was revoked in December after a joint Queensland Health and City Council investigation.

The investigation is still continuing but the Health Department has revealed some body piercing needles could have been reused, potentially exposing clients to a low risk of contracting blood borne virus infections like hepatitis B, C and HIV.

Public health physician Doctor Margaret Young believes it is the first public look-back related to piercing and tattooing.

Doctor Young says free counselling and blood testing is being provided for anyone who was pierced at the salon after June 2006.
